Check Credit Score

One of the ways that you can make sure you credit report is accurate, that you are not a victim of identity theft and that you continue to have good credit or build good credit is to check your credit score.

A credit report is usually defined as a summary of your financial history and now more than ever, you need to keep your credit rating accurate and in good standing.  A good credit rating or score means that you can be approved for a mortgage, car loan, get a job or be able to rent an apartment. Here are some tips on how to monitor your credit report.

Request Your Credit Report Every Year
It is free to request your credit report once a year.  By law, each of the big three credit bureaus must send you a copy of your credit report for free once a year, if you request it.  You can also request it at any time for a small fee.  The big three credit bureaus are Trans Union, Experian and Equifax.

Determine if Your Credit Report is Accurate
Make sure when you request a credit report that you look it over closely. Check to see if the identity information is correct, if your payments are reported correctly and especially make sure if you are aware of any new loans or credit cards taken out.  If you see a loan or credit card that you don’t remember taking out, this might be due to an identity theft.  It is important to contact the issuer of the loan and determine if you opened it or if it was opened fraudulently.  Credit reports are great tools to determine if your identity is being used fraudulently.

Use Your Credit Report to Maximize Your Credit Score
Now that you have your credit report, you can look it over and analyze it. For instance, if you see you have 10 credit card accounts open, close a few of the cards that you don’t use, your score will usually go up.  If you notice that you have large debt to income ratio, pay more of your balance each month to lower your debt.  If you realize that you applying for too many credit cards or loans, reevaluate your needs and only request credit when it serves you best.

By requesting a credit report and monitoring it on a regular basis, you can help build a solid credit history and increase your overall credit score.
